I personally dont do hair some amazing skilled makeup artists also specilaise in hair as well! I had the pleasure of meeting Flamingo Amy when I had my hair done in amazing vintage waves for my friends wedding along side all the bridal party and bride and it stayed in all day!.

I asked Flamingo Amy if she would share some tips to making sure your hair is prepped and ready for the big day.

Introduction

Hello Flamingo Amy!

Firstly can I ask how long have you been doing hair and how did you first get into doing your profession?

I had a really unusual route into styling hair. I got into hairdressing after I’d finished my Fine Art degree. But really, I’d always wanted to style hair. I even did my work experience at 14 years old in a hairdressers.

I went to a 1950’s weekender with a group of friends in around 2005, doing my own hair in wild styles was always my thing, but I had a sliding doors moment when a friend asked me to do hers. Something just clicked and I knew I was destined to work with hair.

From there through another friend, I managed to get some training to style hair ‘vintage style’ in a salon in west London at the weekends (whilst living and working in Norwich during the week – wild times!). This is where it all began…

How far in advance do people need to book you?

If you are getting married on a Saturday then ASAP. I take booking up to around 18 months in advance.

What is your most popular hairstyle for the big day?

This changes, but at the moment there is a huge demand for Hollywood waves. We are also moving into an era where people are preferring sleeker styles, and away from anything too textured.

How do you feel about Hair trials are they needed?

150%. I won’t take a booking without a trial. The trial important for both me and the client. Most of the time, I haven’t styled the clients hair before, so it’s really important that we have a practice run, and the client gets to know how they like to wear their hair

What is the best hair prep for you?

I ask all my clients to blow dry in a firm hold mousse with a flat of round brush. Essentially, they are blow drying their hair to the best of their ability and getting in smooth – this is the best base for me! It means I can spend more time on refining the style, rather than prepping from scratch. For those with naturally curls who want to wear them, I ask them to dry their hair as they normally would. I then go in and refine their curls to make them look their best.

Have you got any wedding day tips?

My biggest tip is to get your dress on an hour before you leave, or if you’re staying at your venue, an hour before the registrar sees you. I promise you, I’m nearly 800 weddings in now, so I know how fast time goes in that last hour, I have seen so many people stressed and late because they did not allow enough time.

A hair related tip would be to really look after your hair in the year before your wedding. Review your shampoo and conditioner, are they right for your hair.

Book in regular trims, there is no hiding damaged hair if you want to wear it down!

Also, buy a satin pillowcase, it will protect your hair from breakage, as well as being good for preventing wrinkles – win/win!
